5 ways to retain nurses in your institution after the pandemic

(1) Stronger training. Stronger training for new nurses, and ongoing continuing education for the nurses presently on staff.

(2) Be an advocate for your nurses. During the pandemic nurses were pushed beyond their physical and emotional breaking point Healthcare systems must be an advocate for the wellbeing of their nurses.

(3) Conduct stay interviews. Conducting stay interviews can help the hospital understand the needs of the retiring nurses so the system can help the nurses still in the field,

(4) Mentoring programs. Offer mentoring programs to new nurses so they can acclimate to the demands of their new career. It can be online or face to face groups.

(5) Flexible schedules. Hospitals can create opportunities to encourage self care by making sure, for example, nurses get their scheduled brakes during their shifts. Offering flexible schedules can also help with feeling supported by the healthcare community.
